What Is Health Age? (From Blood Markers, Not a Gimmick Score)
You've seen "health age" or "body age" on watches and wellness apps. MyVitalSync's Health Age is different: it's an estimate from published blood-marker research (PhenoAge), applied to markers extracted from lab reports you already have — and it is not a clinical diagnosis.
The formula, coefficients, and limitations stay on our methodology. This page is the plain-English version.
Health Age vs calendar age
Calendar age is years since birth. Health Age in MyVitalSync is a research-style estimate of how your blood markers pattern relative to the published PhenoAge method. It is a number in years beside your lab history. It is not a prediction of how long you will live, and it is not a diagnosis of "aging."
One reading is less useful than a trend across panels over time. Our methodology says the same thing: a single PhenoAge result is less meaningful than several panels you can look at together. If you are lining up reports from different labs, start with how to compare blood test results — collection date, units, and the range printed on each report.
Where it comes from: PhenoAge (Levine et al., 2018)
Health Age uses the clinical biomarker form of PhenoAge, the phenotypic-age model published by Morgan Levine and colleagues in Aging(Albany NY), 2018. The paper's blood-marker model was validated on the NHANES dataset of adults aged 20–84.
MyVitalSync implements that published path: nine blood markers plus your age at collection. It is not a marketing black box. The formula and coefficients are on the methodology page. This article does not reprint a simplified protocol or invent coefficients.
The paper: Levine ME, Lu AT, Quach A, et al. An epigenetic biomarker of aging for lifespan and healthspan. Aging (Albany NY). 2018;10(4):573–591. Aging-US · PubMed Central. The title mentions epigenetic biomarkers because the research lineage includes that work. The number in MyVitalSync is the blood-marker calculation described on our methodology page, not a DNA test. More on that in the FAQ.
The nine markers
These are the nine biomarkers the published model uses. The short lines are educational, from our methodology page. They describe what the marker reflects. They are not a statement that your result means you have a disease.
- Albumin — a protein made by the liver; reflects nutritional status and liver function.
- Creatinine — a waste product filtered by the kidneys; reflects kidney function.
- Glucose (fasting) — blood sugar level; reflects metabolic health.
- C-reactive protein (CRP) — an inflammation marker; elevated levels are associated with accelerated aging in the published research.
- Lymphocyte percentage — a type of white blood cell; reflects immune function.
- Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) — average size of red blood cells; reflects anemia and nutritional status.
- Red cell distribution width (RDW) — variation in red blood cell size; associated with inflammation and aging in the published research.
- Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) — an enzyme reflecting liver and bone health.
- White blood cell count (WBC) — total immune cell count; reflects immune activity and inflammation.
The same nine are what the lab results tracker means by "Health Age (PhenoAge) from nine published blood markers."
Missing markers
A full PhenoAge calculation needs all nine, plus age at the blood draw. MyVitalSync labels a result as that published model only when all nine are present.
If some are missing, that is not a silent partial PhenoAge. Our methodology says that when fewer than four of the nine are available, we show a heuristic estimate and label it as such. A panel with at least four markers but not all nine is labelled as an estimate too, not as the full published model. We do not publish a "partial panel is X% accurate" figure.
How this differs from wearable-only "age" scores
A watch score and a blood-marker estimate can both be interesting. They are not the same measurement. This is a comparison of jobs, not a ranking of brands.
| Angle | Wearable or lifestyle "age" | MyVitalSync Health Age |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs | Steps, heart-rate variability, sleep, and similar signals. What is included varies by vendor. | Blood markers read from a lab PDF or photo, plus age at the blood draw. |
| Transparency | Often a proprietary score. | Points to the published PhenoAge paper and to our methodology, where the marker list and limitations live. |
| Job | Daily motivation or recovery context. | One more signal beside a lab timeline and visit prep. |
| Clinical status | Not a diagnosis. | Also not a diagnosis, and not a clinical measurement. |
Wearables can still be useful context. The product can pull Apple Health or Whoop data to sit beside blood work, as the medical disclaimer describes. That context is not Health Age, and it does not turn Health Age into a clinical measurement.
Health Age vs Health Score
They show up near each other in the app. They are not the same number.
- Health Age is the PhenoAge-based research estimate, in years.
- Health Score is a proprietary 0–100 composite of how markers sit against reference ranges. Methodology is explicit: it is not based on published research.
Both are informational. Neither diagnoses you. A high Health Score does not mean you are healthy, and a Health Age below your calendar age does not prove you will live longer.
Important limitations
- The published model was validated on adults aged 20–84 in NHANES. MyVitalSync does not calculate Health Age for panels collected when you were under 18.
- The calculation uses age at blood collection, not today's birthday.
- It is a research-grade estimate, not a clinical measurement. Do not use it alone for medical decisions.
- Lab results are not the full picture by themselves. MedlinePlus makes the same point: talk with your provider about what a result means for you.
The Biological Age Estimate section of the medical disclaimer states this directly: Health Age reflects patterns in blood markers at a point in time. It should not be read as a definitive measure of health or longevity.
Who it's for
Adults who already get labs — an annual panel, a Quest or LabCorp PDF, a photo of a paper report — and want one more plain-English signal beside the trend. People preparing questions for a clinician: "my Health Age estimate moved — what, if anything, should we discuss?" Those are questions, not a self-diagnosis.
It is not for emergency care. It is not for minors. It is not a substitute for an exam or a history. If you are organizing an adult parent's reports from another city, with their consent, the timeline is the same idea — see tracking a parent's labs from abroad. Health Age on that profile still follows the adult-only rule above.
How to try it in MyVitalSync
- Upload a PDF or photo of a lab report you already have.
- Markers are extracted. When the PhenoAge inputs are there, Health Age can display.
- Pair it with trends (Individual and Family) and with Doctor Prep, the one-page visit brief in the app. For what to bring and what to ask, see how to prepare for a doctor's visit.
- Read methodology and Trust before you treat the number as more than an estimate.
The original file is discarded after extraction. Structured marker data is what stays, encrypted and locked to your account. MyVitalSync is not a HIPAA covered entity; we use HIPAA-aligned practices and a Business Associate Agreement with AWS. Details are on Trust and the privacy policy.
Free: one lifetime upload, Doctor Prep, one profile, no trend history. Individual $3.99/mo: unlimited uploads + trends, one profile. Family $8.99/mo: same, up to 5 profiles. Your first upload is free. Plan details are on pricing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Health Age a DNA methylation or epigenetic clock test?
- No. MyVitalSync Health Age uses the blood-marker PhenoAge model described on methodology. It is not a consumer DNA kit, and the app does not run methylation testing. The 2018 Levine paper discusses biological-age research, including that blood-marker path. The in-app number is the marker calculation, not a genetic test.
- Can I lower my Health Age?
- This page does not promise that any diet, supplement, or workout will move the number. A single reading is less useful than a trend across panels. If the estimate changes, the useful next step is a question for your clinician — not a self-directed plan based on the estimate alone.
- Does AI invent Health Age?
- No. When the published inputs are present, Health Age is calculated from that model. AI is used separately for plain-English explanations and Doctor Prep. Those write-ups are not the Health Age number, and they are not a diagnosis.
- What does it cost to see Health Age?
- Free: one lifetime upload, Doctor Prep, one profile, no trend history. Individual $3.99/mo: unlimited uploads + trends, one profile. Family $8.99/mo: same, up to 5 profiles. Your first upload is free. Health Age can display when the panel supports it. Trend history across reports is on Individual and Family. Details are on pricing.
This article explains Health Age in plain English. It is information, not a diagnosis or medical advice — talk to your doctor about any results. See the medical disclaimer.
